Often I am asked :

What Goes Into Making a Pen?

Each handcrafted pen is the result of careful work, precision tools, and years of skill. Here’s what it takes to create just one:

🔧 Tools & Equipment

To make a high-quality pen, the maker uses:

  • A wood lathe for shaping the pen body
  • Turning tools and chisels for fine cutting
  • A drill press for accurate hole placement and reaming the wood
  • Sanding and finishing tools for a smooth, polished surface
  • Clamps, presses, and specialty pen kits to assemble the pen
  • Protective gear, sharpening systems, and of course workshop maintenance

These tools require regular upkeep and replacement, and many cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars to buy.

🪵 Materials

Each pen is made from premium materials such as:

  • Hardwoods (often rare or exotic) carefully selected for grain and character
  • High-quality metal components (like rifle bolt-action, cat, and other kits, various clasps, and many components)
  • Finishes and adhesives to protect and seal the wood

Some of these materials are required to be imported or difficult to source locally—especially specialty pen mechanisms and decorative hardware.

⏱️ Time & Skill

Making a pen isn’t just assembly—it’s art and precision, and eye for detail and style and tone of each pen.

For each pen:

  • The wood must be cut, drilled, glued, and turned to exact dimensions
  • The surface is sanded through multiple grits, to a very high polish, then finished and polished to a glass-like sheen
  • Parts are aligned and pressed together with extreme care to avoid cracks and flaws in the final wood that has been created
  • Simple mistakes can ruin materials, meaning the process demands focus and experience, otherwise the work needs to begin again. This can happen, even if the wood itself is found to be inferior, due to cracks in the wood, and the process needs to start again, as only the best will be chosen.

Each pen can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours to complete, depending on complexity of the pen and the skill of the artisan.

💰 Cost Breakdown

Behind the final price, there are:

  • Material costs: wood, hardware, finish, packaging
  • Tool wear and maintenance
  • Workshop power and supplies
  • Time invested by the maker
  • Added value from presentation cases or custom designs
  • And in this case, a portion going to local charities or local businesses for commission
